Fall Used Book Sale Dates Announced

Fall Book Sale Beginning Thursday, November 3, 2011

In the market for a romance, literary classic or travel guide? Want to learn more about politics or own a collection of lip-smacking recipes? Then buy a book.

The Friends of the Kent County Library’s Used Book Sale offers items for a fraction of retail prices. Savvy shoppers can find used paperbooks, DVDs, games, puzzles, pristine diaries, amazingly affordable children’s books and more. This rare opportunity to shop a Friends’ used books sale only happens once or twice a year.

Most books range in price from 25 cents to $2. The better books section offers upscale items in good condition for holiday gift giving, as well as extraordinary items for the connoisseur or rare book collector.

The exclusive Members Preview Night happens Thursday, November 3 from 5:30 to 7:30. Members simply bring the invitation they received in the mail, and non-members may join at the door for the bargain price of $10 per person. Preview Night attendees partake in a happy hour of cocktails and nibbles. They also take advantage of a large, diverse selection of books that will later be picked over by other shoppers.

In honor of the First Friday in November, Friday offers extended hours for the first time. Shoppers may browse and enjoy refreshments from 5-8.

Sunday is the least expensive day of the sale: fit as many books in a box as you can and pay a mere five bucks for it. Tuesday is “let’s move as many books as we can” day, featuring special price reductions.

The public used book sale hours are as follows:

• Friday Nov. 4, 10-8
• Saturday Nov. 5, 10-3
• Sunday Nov. 6 10-3
• Monday Nov. 7, 2011, 10-5
• Tuesday Nov. 8, 2011, 10-5

Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library, subsidizing new books, needed upgrades, and programs that promote reading and build community. Shoppers help to sustain a society of readers in an era of declining literacy.

The Friends’ next book sale is slated for the fall of 2011.

If you want be notified when the exact dates are determined, you have two options for staying in the loop:

1. Become a member of the Friends for ten bucks. Members receive a special invitation to the sale’s private preview night.
2. Sign up for the Kent County Public Library’s email newsletter.

2010 LOGO CONTEST–UPDATE

DEADLINE EXTENDED!
We have extended the deadline for entries to 4/30/10 because inclement weather delayed the Friends promotional activities for the contest.

We are also clarifying submission instructions:

• Method 1: Mail a hard copy to THE FRIENDS OF THE KENT COUNTY LIBRARY, Kent County Library, 408 High Street, Chestertown, MD 21620.
• Method 2: Send in an electronic version. (This is for people who have Illustrator or other professional software. If you do not own or have access to such software, use method 1, above.) Include your name in the title of your digital (preferably scalable) file. Send your digital entry to kentcountyfriends@gmail.com. Digital artwork must use Pantone Matching System (PMS), not RGB or CMYK.

The Friends of the Kent County Library are hosting a logo design contest.

• Design a new, original logo for us. Have fun and be creative!
• The winner will receive a $200 prize.
• Send it in by midnight on April 30, 2009.
• Include your name, postal address, phone number, and email address, if applicable.
• Because of the specs below, we encourage a design that’s visible from a distance (i.e., with little or no lettering).

LOGISTICS The logo will appear on a Maryland license plate and needs to meet MVA’s criteria:

• Maximum size: 3 inches in height and 3 inches in width.
• Maximum number of colors: 4. Colors must solid: no shading.

Donate those books!

The Friends are calling on local residents to donate gently used books and AV materials in preparation for the upcoming book sale. Instead of letting your unneeded items take up space and collect dust in your home, drop them off at the Chestertown branch of the Kent County Library, located at 408 High Street.

Books are reviewed and sorted, some added to the collection and the majority sold at the Friends book sales. Proceeds for the sale of these items support Library projects in all three branches.
